Beneficial Mycorrhizae - Your Plant’s Best Friend

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Jason Willkomm Innoculating your potting soil mix or hydroponic reservoir with beneficial mycorrhizae has many benefits. With the chelating enzymes the fungus release, the plants uptake more useable nutrients. With the funal hairs acting as a secondary root system, plants grow big faster. Overall, plants grow up healthier. When fungal hairs, called hyphae, were first discovered surrounding plant roots on a 460 million year old fossil, it was believed the fungus must be robbing the plants of their energy. Further research has since proved this to be false. In fact, these very fossils became the evidence that suggests a relationship existed between the plants and the fungus that benefits both. The evidence goes on to conclude that it was exactly this symbiotic relationship that allowed plants to begin successfully growing on land about 55 million years ago. In this arrangement, specialized fungal hairs form organs called mycorrhizae along the plants roots. The plants provide energy to the fungus, and the growing fungus produce enzymes that convert (chelate) organic material into minerals that are easy for the plant to absorb. The fungus also acts as a moist cushion against heat and drought. The fungus exudes antibiotics that protect roots from disease, and the action of the fungus protect the plant against toxicites in the soil as well. Research since these discoveries show that 90 percent of all green plants on land form these relationships. The fungal hairs are much finer than root hairs, and so have a much larger surface area compared to roots. They can grow into small places that plant roots cannot. Combined with the productions of chelating enzymes, plant growth rates can be substantially increased by maintaining healthy mycorrhizae. Using mushroom compost as part of your soil mix will provide plenty of mycorrhizae. Some quality organic soil mixes, such as FoxFarm original, contain some mushroom compost. There are also solid tablets and a granular form that will innoculate your soil, such as Plant Success. You can also add mycorrhizae to your soil by using Peace of Mind organic fertalizers, or by using Rainbow Mix bat guano. International Students Must Look For Accreditated Schools In Usa / Canada / Europe

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Jagdish Khubchandani If you ask me what is the one most important fact to look for in a university while planning to study abroad. Accreditation is my answer, Hands down! Accreditation is now-a-days the most important word while planning to apply for schools. Earlier I was of the view that scholarship providing schools or schools in big cities are the best options but I have started believing that, for a 2 year scholarship or for the sake of living in a big town, no one should or can afford to put the entire career in jeopardy. Accreditation decides your career and life in a major way when you are on a foreign soil. A friend of mine who was junior to me in medical school went to a non- accredited school in UK. After his graduation he was not considered for any jobs or higher study options. On the contrary, his classmates who were of British origin got jobs although they had a lower GPA. It does matter for an international student as natives have opportunities irrespective of the accreditation status of the school they went to. In common terms, accreditation is the official recognition of a school, university or institution for provision of satisfactory education, training or exam preparation. This in turn can help employers/ hiring agencies to know who they are hiring when you complete your education. Should an institution decide to procure accreditation, agencies mentioned below give opportunity to make choices, to exercise volition regarding accreditation. The process of accreditation requires the school to meet certain norms and criterion that are established by various regional accrediting agencies enlisted as follows- New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) Provides Accreditation to schools in-Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (NCA)Provides Accreditation to schools in-Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Navajo Nation, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA)Provides Accreditation to schools in-Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Central America, Europe, and the Middle East. Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS)Provides Accreditation to schools in-Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Latin America. Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)Provides Accreditation to schools in-California, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, Palau, Micronesia, Northern Marianas, Marshall Islands, and other Australasian locations. Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NWCCU) Provides Accreditation to schools in-Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. There is no legally designated accrediting agency in the United States and Europe. The only safe route in USA for applying to schools is a thorough consideration of the aforementioned agencies. I don’t deny the existence of numerous agencies in USA but the once which really are acknowledged widely are mentioned here. Job Search: Time Management

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Virginia Bola, PsyD There is an old adage that “Looking for a job is harder than working.” How true! The rigors of job search are magnified by the turmoil we experience: lack of self-confidence, humiliation, financial pressure, and the undercurrent of emotions that color all we do: fear, anger, depression, anxiety, loss. One practical step we can take to lower the stress and conserve our energy for finding work, not feeding our bloated worries, is to manage our time effectively. Have you ever noticed that you get more chores done when you’re busy? If time is limited, we squeeze in those extra demands because we know they have to get done by a deadline and we fear putting them off. When time is unlimited, such as when you take a few days off work, there is no pressure to rush-”I’ve got four days, I’ll do it tomorrow.” Suddenly, you are back at work and realize that you didn’t accomplish half of what you had planned. This lack of structure is magnified when you are unemployed. There is no pressure to get up, get dressed, get out of the house by a specific time. We know we have things to do. We need to update our resume, create some new cover letters, research some possible job openings. It is so hard to get started because we hate having to do it, we don’t feel creative or excited about the whole prospect, and we dread having to go through the horrors of interviewing. We procrastinate, telling ourselves that when we are ready, it will just “flow.” For a few hours, a few days, we’ll just indulge ourselves and relax. When the end of the month arrives and we compare our diminishing bank balance to our multiplying bills, we mentally beat ourselves up for not having accomplished what we had so earnestly intended. Now we generate our own pressure, magnified by guilt and self-reproach. Stress levels and blood pressure rise. We feel resentful, angry, depressed. “I didn’t ask to get into this situation. It’s unfair. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.” Adopting a reasonable schedule can avoid reaching this point. Try these ideas: 1. Take a day to do nothing but plan out what you are going to do, and when. 2. Concentrate on not over-committing yourself. You may be used to working 8 or more hours per day and think that is what you will now spend on job search. Remember that adage: your hunt for work is a lot more difficult than simply walking into a familiar employer and pursuing your daily routine. Recognize that and limit your job hunting to fewer hours per day. 3. If you rigorously limit your job hunt-related activities to 4 hours per day to start (you can always increase later), you may find yourself forced to stop before you are ready. This creates the impetus to get you going the following day — you can hardly wait to get back to what you are working on. 4. When your “work time” is over, stop. Consciously focus your attention on relaxing: take a walk, read a book, throw a ball, watch television, whatever pleases you. You will be able to relax because you know you completed exactly what you planned. The guilt, and the sense of “I should have, I should be” no longer exist and you are free, for a short time anyway, to do anything you want. 5. Identify your priorities by looking at what day of the week is best for each kind of activity. If you are searching the classifieds, Sunday is the premium time to do it. If you are networking or cold calling, concentrate on the morning weekday hours. Agency visits, whether for temporary work or head hunting, can be relegated to the afternoons when employers are difficult to reach and already fatigued. 6. Analyze your own daily energy patterns and put them to work for you. Make sure that during your high energy periods you are “out there,” contacting people and presenting yourself. Use your low energy times for solitary, mundane tasks: researching companies and jobs, organizing your paperwork, planning your next day’s activities. The inevitable stress of unemployment and job search can never be totally eliminated, but managing your time and being gentle with yourself can turn a painful situation into simply an uncomfortable nuisance. Three Great Ideas For Choosing Fun and Meaningful Wedding Party Gifts

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Todd Haness More and more couples are doing things a little differently for their weddings. Many couples have wedding showers co-ed style instead of the traditional girlie bridal showers and some couples are even having bridesmen and groomsmaids attendants that stand up for them but break from the tradition of being of the same gender. Things like this may have shocked our grandparents, but these days weddings are becoming more personal and meaningful to the couple versus strictly following how its always been. So why not be a little different and plan your wedding party gifts together instead of the tradition of the Groomsmen gifts being left up to the Groom and Bridesmaid gifts being left to the Bride? These three great ideas will help get you on your way to choosing the perfect wedding party gifts for your special attendants. One way of making the wedding party gifts fun and also meaningful is to choose a theme. This can be particularly simple if there is something that all or the majority of you already do together. One Bride and Groom recently chose golf themed gifts that were suitable for all of their attendants because they had all golfed with one another at various times. They chose items such as an 18 hole golf cooler and the fun insulated golf club drink dispenser that sits in your golf bag with your clubs and made it even more special by including gift certificates for a round at the course nearby for the Maid of Honor and the Best Man. Another variation could be to add a gift certificate for the pro shop or for lunch in the clubhouse. By including something they will use and keep as well as something experiential you will really thank them for sharing in your special day. Another fun idea for the right group of wedding party attendants is Happy Hour and gifts of home barware. This is especially appropriate for the Bride and Groom who love wine and maybe even goes wine tasting with their friends. There are many items like beautiful wine stoppers and bottle opening tools as well as digital Wine Masters that help guide wine lovers in their selections of the perfect wine that can all be great gifts. Include a bottle of your favorite wine or perhaps a special bottle of a wine that you know your friends love, and you have a lovely wedding party gift sure to delight. For wedding parties when there isnt necessarily a common connection amongst the attendants apart from all being in your wedding, there is a way to tie it all together and make the wedding party gifts very meaningful. One couple recently chose a unique gift for each individual but the common link was that each gift was able to be engraved in some way. The Bride and Groom then chose a phrase that is inspirational to them and had all the gifts personalized with it along with the date of the wedding. The attendants all knew this was something personal that thought had gone into whether they received a picture frame with the saying, a money clip or a flask. Each item was chosen with the recipients taste in mind, but the common personalization brought it all together with meaning. Choosing gifts for your wedding party should not be something that adds stress to your planning. These are your special friends and you want them to feel appreciated for sharing your special day, not to mention buying that bridesmaid dress or renting yet another tux! Use these ideas to spur some imagination and creativity to come up with gifts that are not only useful, but are thoughtful and meaningful to the recipient. Combined with a personal note, they are sure to be the gifts that wont be put away on a shelf and forgotten. For Busy Professionals: 3 Reasons to Get a Degree Online

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Diane Hannover 1. Flexible Schedules Even if you’re lucky enough to have a few extra hours each week that you could devote to your education, a traditional degree program’s rigid class schedule is often difficult if not impossible to fit into your own tight and rigid work, family, and just plain old living schedule. Most online degree programs give you the flexibility to take classes and “do schoolwork” when it suits you, not the other way around. 2. No Commute How much time do you throw away driving to and from work each day? How many more precious hours would get eaten up if you had to drive to and from school and could this be one of the reasons you’re not going for that valuable degree in the first place? An online degree program takes the hassle and wasted commuting time out of the equation! 3. Go Your Own Pace Many online degree programs let you progress through your classes as casually or as quickly as YOU need or want. Notice the shift in focus to YOUR time requirements versus the school’s? Even more interesting: When given more control over their own schedules and pacing, many students often find they can do MORE than they originally believed! Neglected Health Tips

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Brett Nordin There are many places to find a good health tip, whether it is on the internet or in a book. I am going to go over a few different tips that are important, but sometimes neglected. As I say in most of my health and fitness articles, the tips I give are not hard or boring. They will make getting healthy and fit an easy thing to do. You will be surprised. Something that will help you out is adding some kind of fitness into your life. It does not have to be strenuous or tiring by any means. It can be as simple as taking a walk around your block. Adding this into your schedule helps out on so many levels. It gives you a chance to get outside and breathe some fresh air. It helps keep your body active, many different muscle will keep stimulated. Walking outside also gives you a chance to open up your chest and breathe deep. A lot of people that I talk too, that use walking in their daily routine, tell me it not only does wonders for their body, but also for their mind. They say that being outside alone gives them time to think and really clear their mind of stress. Give it a try; with this simple good health tip you will notice a great difference. A pretty self-explanatory good health tip is to stop eating out. I’m not saying that every place that you eat out is unhealthy, but chances are that the majority of them are not good for your health. Usually ‘eat out’ places tend to use a lot of processed foods and contain tons of salts. If you do find yourself at a fast food place, try and eat one of their healthy alternatives. Now, even the most unhealthy food restaurants will have a couple of healthy choices on their menu. Another tip comes with one simple and common word, water. Yes water; the majority of people, young and old, don’t get their daily water requirements. Again, a very simple good health tip that works wonders. Start drinking more water instead of the regular sugary drinks. Examples are coffee, soda, and juice. Of course it is unrealistic to cut these things out of your diet completely but instead try to exchange some of them for water. Somewhere around 8 cups of water a day is a healthy amount. Get in the routine of having water with you. If you have water with you, there is no need to go and buy a liter of soda from the corner store. My last good health tip comes with little explanation. When you eat, please eat slowly. Most people eat like wild animals. Enjoy your food and let your body take it with ease, don’t force it all down and let your body have to suffer. You’ll notice when you eat slower that you won’t be eating as much. Eating slow will give your body a chance to tell you when it is full, instead of eating it all up quickly and your body not having a chance to tell you to stop. Eat slowly, your food will taste better!! Brett Nordin is the proud owner of the blog ‘Health and Fitness For Anyone’ and is dedicated to revealing his knowledge and information to you. The Holy Spirit Is Our Guide

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Terry Weber You have probably heard it said the Holy Spirit is like a cloud; a fog; a ghost or even a wind. As we all know, it is as hard to explain what or who the Holy Spirit is as it is to explain what wind is. Obviously, the wind is something we cannot see, But, we can feel the wind so that leads us to try to explain it by talking about the effects of the wind and what it does all around us. I have spent many fun-filled hours in wind-related activities such as: sailing boats, flying airplanes and soaring in hang gliders. As a result, I have become quite familiar with the effects of the wind. I know many of the ways the wind can affect whatever vehicle Im in. Of course, it is always up to me as the one who is in control of the boat or plane to adjust the sails or wings properly to make the best, most practical and safest use of that wind. I must, through training and experience, learn to make that unseen and uncontrollable wind became my servant. When I feel the wind on my face, I know it is there and I know in which direction it is blowing. The wind can be soft and gentle or it can be wild, and strong! Then, it is up to me to learn what the wind is telling me so I will always be the one who is in control of the airplane or sailboat I am in. Thats when I have to make a choice: I can either fight the wind or yield to it. When I try to fight the wind, it does not work. I never win that battle. But, when I relax and go with the flow, Ive found I can; always find ways to make progress toward my goal. For example, when in flight, in a light aircraft, in a strong, rough and bumpy wind, I will choose to head my fragile airplane to the sanctuary and safety a nearby airport. Or, when in a sailboat in stormy winds and rough seas, I will steer toward a protected harbor where I can drop my anchor and know Ill be safe. In these ways I find I take control of the effects of the wind but I can never actually control the wind. As Christians, we sometimes try to explain the Holy Spirit as being a person who lives in us where he affects our lives much like the invisible wind. (See Acts: at Pentecost the Holy Spirit came in the form of a wind). Like the wind, we are made aware of the Holy Spirits presence in us because of the effect he has on us. As we know, from Scripture, the Holy Spirits purpose is to live inside of those who believe in Jesus. This is so Gods character which includes: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control are produced in the lives of all believers. (Gal. 5:22-23). As Christians we do not have to try to achieve these characteristics on our own, because the Holy Spirit suggests them to our hearts. Also, as believers, we agree and place our trust in what the Holy Spirit advises. The result is that our spiritual growth is improved as we find ourselves walking in the Spirit (Gal. 5:25). As I said before, over a lifetime, Ive learned the many ways I could make the wind work for my benefit. This experience has given me a better understanding of how the invisible wind of the Holy Spirit can guide my heart and mind. Experience has also taught me I cannot control the wind of the Holy Spirit any more than I can control the natural winds of this world. The benefit to me is that the wind of the Holy Spirit is constantly guiding, directing, and doing a work in me, so that, what I do, the way I live, is what God wants. But what about the non-Christians out there? Again, the uncontrollable Holy Spirit can be like a wind that also gently nudges the hearts and minds of all non-Christians. The Spirit offers them those same benefits: a new born again life of forgiveness with Jesus. (John 16:8-11). This gentle persuasion is done so these non-believers will feel welcomed and hopefully — have a desire to understand the Scripture that says to them: greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. (Rom. 8). When there is wind, we know it is there because we see what it does. In the same way, with our faith and trust in God, we can live our lives with the expectation that we will experience the good effects of the wind of the Holy Spirit who lives in each believer. Finally, when we relinquish our attempts to control the uncontrollable wind of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. then, and only then, will he become — our guide. Terry L.
