7 Keys to the Care and Feeding of Parents

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Jeff Herring Over the years I’ve probably written hundreds of articles on how parents can handle their teen-agers. This, I believe, is the first I’ve written on how teens can ‘handle’ their parents. Here are seven principles of Care and Feeding along with an application for each. The Truth. Parents have confirmed this with me over and over for more than 20 years: Mom and Dad would rather know the truth about something up front - no matter how horrible it may be - than to find out later they have been lied to and conned. When parents know the truth, they can deal with what is real, and things don’t get as confusing. Application: Tell the truth, whatever it is. You may have to take some heat, especially if you are coming clean. The benefit is that now there are more brains working on whatever problems you are facing, Trust: Trust in a family is like tokens in a video game room. In a video game place, the more tokens you have, the more games you can play. In a family, the more trust you have, the more you are able to do. The more deposits you can make into your parent’s ‘trust bank,’ the more and more you will be able to be in charge of your self. Application: Ask yourself ‘is what I’m doing going to build trust or break trust?’ When trust is broken, begin the repair job right away. It’s a fair bet that you have lived with these people for a few years and know what they need to see in order to build trust. Nag, Nag, Nag. I’ve rarely if ever seen a situation where one person was nagging without the other person being irresponsible in some way. If you think your parents are nagging you, look for places where you may have been irresponsible in some way. I can guarantee you this: Parents do not sit up late at night thinking things like ‘OK, what can I find to nag them about tomorrow?’ As anyone who has ever done it can tell you, nagging is no fun. Application: Pick something your parents have been nagging you about. Figure out how to get out in front of the situation by taking care of it - doing the chore, whatever - before they can even mention it. If nothing else, the shock and confusion on their faces will be worth it. Perspective. If you’re 16, unless you have a very incredible memory and can remember all the way back to the womb, it’s a safe bet you have about a 13- to 14-year perspective on life. Your parents, on the other hand, have been watching you your entire life and, if they try real hard, can even remember life before you. That’s why it’s sometimes difficult for them to see you as a teen becoming a young adult instead of seeing you as a child. Application: Give them some room when it feels as if they are treating you like a child. Negotiate with them. Remember, they are just showing the love they have for you. The W’s. The more trust you have, the more you can do. The more of a certain type of structure you have, the more freedom you will have. Parents want to know the W’s: Who you are going to be with. What you will be doing. Where you will be. When you will be home. Instead of seeing this as an intrusive, controlling pain, try looking at it as a ticket to more freedom. If you consistently supply your parents with this information, the more and more you’ll be able to do. Application: When you approach your parents about going out with friends, supply them with the W’s - as many as you know - before they ask. Surprising, even positively shocking your parents can be fun. A Resource. Because your folks have lived longer than you have, they have had a few more life experiences. They are a wealth of information on how to do some of the tasks of life. They might even be a resource on how not to do some. Use them. Pick their brains. Everyone likes to feel as if they have some wisdom to impart. Application: As you look for/apply for a job, buy a car, learn about relationships, etc., ask your parents for tips about what to do and not do, say and not say, etc. Information. For better or worse, parents have this curious little habit of being interested in your life. If you are not sharing much with them, they will ask questions. Which sets up this wonderful little family scene: Parent: ‘How was school today?’ Teen: ‘Fine.’ Parent: ‘What did you do today?’ Teen: ‘Nothing.’ Parent: ‘Oh c’mon, you must have done something!’ Irritation, yelling and slamming of doors not far behind. Application: The way to avoid this unpleasant scenario is to look for something in your day that you can share with your parents. Like the anti-nagging technique, this one allows you to get out in front of something before it becomes a problem. Teen Dating Violence: What Every Girl Should Know

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Cassandra Mack One of the hardest lessons that youll ever have to learn is not Chemistry, Calculus or even the laws of Physics. It has nothing to do with history, English Literature or understanding why Maya Angelous caged bird sings. Its how to recognize and get out of an abusive relationship. Perhaps he only hits you when hes angry. Maybe he doesnt hit you at all. Instead he calls you names, tells you that youre nothing without him and tries to control every move you make. Or maybe he doesnt do any of these things but theres a little voice inside your head telling you that YOURE TREADING ON DEADLY GROUND. You cant quite put your finger on it. Youre not entirely sure how to explain it. But you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that theres something horribly wrong going on. Youre too afraid to ask for help, but too afraid not to. Paralyzed by fear and blinded by love you dont know which way to turn or how to set yourself free.If this is happening to you, then you are in an abusive relationship. Regardless of what he tells you or what you may think, you dont have to take it. And believe it or not, you are not alone. Studies show that one out of five women have experience violence or emotional intimidation in their relationships. Dating violence is very serious, because many of these relationships end in hospitalizations and some even end in death. And just like you, they all thought it wouldnt happen to them. This is why it is critical that you seek help and get out if you are in an abusive relationship. The longer you stay the worse your situation will get. I know its hard to imagine being without him because you love him and you really want to believe that things will get better. But they wont unless you leave. Laurie age 19 says, The first time my boyfriend hit me, I couldnt believe it. He saw me kiss one of my male friends on the cheek and totally flipped out. He waited until we were alone, dragged me behind the building and beat me down to the ground. He told me that it was my fault because I shouldnt be kissing on other guys when I already have a boyfriend. Could you believe that I stayed with him for two more years after that? Michelle age 17 says, Rick was the most popular guy in school. I couldnt believe he wanted to go out with me. He could have any girl he wanted and he chose me. He had a nice car, bought me jewelry and made me feel like I was special. But three months into the relationship things changed. He would call me a bitch or a whore if I even looked at another guy. He told me if I ever left him he would kill me. I didnt believe him until he took out a gun and pulled the trigger. Luckily it wasnt loaded. Brenda age 21 says, Ive been with Miguel since I was 16. We use to play fight but then it would turn serious. He would choke me and pull my hair. He told me that no one else wanted me because I was fat. I was carrying his baby thats why I was fat. But he didnt care. sometimes if he got real angry he hit me in my stomach. He blames me for everything. Half the time I didnt know what was wrong. If he went out all night with his friends I was supposed to sit by the phone and wait. But if I wanted to hang out with my friends Miguel would have a fit. Even though he hit me it was the name-calling that hurt me the most. I can take a punch, but I dont like him calling me a bitch. If you or someone you know is in a situation like Laurie, Michelle, or Brenda then you have got to get help and get out . Dating violence happens everywhere and with all kinds of people. Violence is not a normal part of dating. It is not healthy. Hitting and jealousy are not signs of love they are signs of control. Every violent relationship has the potential of ending in murder. Even if the guy doesnt mean to kill his girlfriend it can happen. Are you willing to take that chance? What Is Relationship Abuse? Relationship abuse occurs when you are threatened, coerced, intimidated, insulted or assaulted by the person you are in a relationship with. Relationship abuse is not the same as having an argument. In an abusive relationship one person is afraid of, or intimidated by the other. Relationship abuse does not just happen one time, it is something that happens over and over again. There are three kinds of relationship abuse: emotional, physical, and sexual. Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse can be difficult to detect because its not as obvious as physical or sexual abuse but it is damaging none the less. Emotional abuse includes name calling, put downs, being told that you are worthless or ugly, being unfavorably compared to other females, being humiliated, embarrassed, threatened, and ordered around. Physical Abuse Physical abuse is hitting, pushing, slapping, kicking, and pulling your hair, punching, choking, throwing things at you or pulling weapons out on you. Physical abuse usually becomes more violent as the relationship progresses. The longer you stay the worse the beatings get. Physical abuse is used to scare you, restrain you and control you. Hitting is not an act of love. It is an act of violence. Sexual Abuse Sexual abuse occurs when you are forced, intimidated, manipulated or coerced into participating in a sexual act which can include intercourse, oral sex, fondling or any other type of sexual act. Perhaps he didnt force you to have sex but he coerced , intimidated or manipulated you into having sex. Thats still sexual abuse and it is not your fault. Maybe he threatened to leave you or spread rumors about you if you didnt have sex with him. If he did then you were coerced. And you dont have to take it. What Are Warning Signs That Will Tell You If Your Boyfriend Has The Potential To Be An Abuser? The reason so many young women get trapped in abusive relationships is because they dont know what the early warning signs are. Answer these questions and find out if your boyfriend has the potential to be an abuser. Is your boyfriend jealous and possessive? Does he try to tell you who to talk to and who you should be friends with? Does he become angry and agitated the moment you talk to another guy? Does he constantly accuse you of flirting with other guys or cheating on him? Does he tell you what to wear? Has he ever called you out of your name? Does he try to make you feel guilty if you cannot see him? Does he ask you your whereabouts whenever hes unable to reach you? Does he try to isolate you from your friends and family? Does he have a violent temper? Have you ever seen him call another female out of her name? Do you find yourself apologizing to your friends for your boyfriends remarks or behaviors? Does he threaten to leave you if you dont do what he wants? Does he insist on seeing you during all of your free time? Do you feel you have to ask him permission before you make a decision? Does he spy on you or call you constantly to see what you are doing? If you answered yes to any of these questions then your boyfriend has the potential to be an abuser. Pay attention to the warning signs and listen to your intuition. If you think that you may be in danger then leave before its too late. Talk your feelings through with someone you trust and listen to what your intuition is telling you to do. Dont make excuses and dont try to talk yourself out of your feelings. Are You In An Abusive Relationship? Many young women do not realize that their relationship is abusive because their boyfriends behave like Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde. One day he is loving and attentive the next day he is violent and enraged. Abusive relationships become more violent over time. Usually an abuser doesnt start hitting his girlfriend until he feels comfortable in the relationship or she tries to leave him. For your own safety and well-being you need to know if your relationship is abusive. You may have even noticed that there is a predictable pattern to your relationship. Your boyfriends moods and behavior may go back and forth in a cycle. This is known as the cycle of violence. Ill explain this cycle as we go along. To figure out if you are in an abusive relationship ask yourself these questions. Are you afraid of, or intimidated by your boyfriend? Have you ever lied to your friends and family to cover up your boyfriends behavior? Are you afraid to make new friends, because you dont want to upset your boyfriend? Has your boyfriend ever pressured you to do something that made you feel dirty or uncomfortable? Has your boyfriend ever put you down, ridiculed you or hurt you in any way? Does he slap, shove, kick, shake, pull your hair or throw things at you? Has he ever threatened you? Has he ever pulled a weapon out on you? Do you not see friends and family because of his jealousy? Do you feel like you have to walk on eggshells in order to keep him happy? Have you been secretive or afraid to tell others about your boyfriend? Does he drink, use drugs then becomes violent? Does he follow you or constantly make you check in with him? Has he ever threatened to hurt you, someone you love, or himself if you leave him? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you are in an abusive relationship. You may think its no big deal. But it is, because it will only get worse. The reason it is so difficult to end an abusive relationship is because an abuser is not always behaving abusively. This is the cycle of violence that I referred to earlier. Barrie Levy author of, In Love and In Danger: A Teens Guide to Breaking Free of Abusive Relationships, says that every abusive relationship goes through a three-tier cycle. Stage 1. The Tension Building Stage This is the stage where the tension begins to build. You boyfriend becomes more irritable, agitated and explosive. He blows up over little things, lashes out and is extremely critical of you. You feel like you have to walk on eggshells or stay out of his way in order to keep him calm. The tension is so thick you can cut it with a knife. Stage 2. The Explosion Stage This is the stage where your boyfriend strikes out either physically or verbally. He calls you names, throws things at you or assaults you. The longer you stay together the worse the explosions become. Perhaps this time it was a shove or a slap, maybe next time it will be a punch, a kick, or a visit to the emergency room. Stage 3. Honeymoon Stage This is the stage where he tells you how sorry he is and swears that it will never happen again. This is what keeps the two of you together. He promises to control his temper. You promise not to upset him. He buys you flowers and candy or writes you passionate love letters. He tells you how much he loves you and that you are the center of his universe. You both make excuses. And you take him back hoping he really means it this time. What Can You Do If You Are Being Abused? If you are in an abusive relationship seek help and get out. Talk to someone who can help a counselor, a teacher, your family, a minister or a trusted friend. There is a listing of helpful numbers in the resource section of this book that can help you figure out your options. There are people who want to help you. You do not have to go through this experience alone. Youve already taken the first step by reading this chapter. You can begin helping yourself by recognizing that you are lovable, capable and worthwhile and you have the power to heal from this experience. You may feel ashamed, afraid, alone or even depressed but you can move past this and come out stronger. What you need most is time and support to heal. You deserve to be safe. You deserve love that is not violent or abusive. You deserve to go to bed at night not feeling afraid. Here are some things that you can do to be safe. Take The Abuse Seriously Dating violence is serious business. Youve got to take your situation seriously if you want the abuse to stop. Insist that your boyfriend go for counseling to get the help he needs. If you are not ready then at least take a time out period from your relationship until he completes an anger management or counseling program. If he refuses then you must leave for good. Talk to Someone Tell someone what is happening. Talk to your family or a trained professional who can help you work through your feelings. You need support to figure out what to do. Talking to your friends can help you get your feelings out but you need the support of your family along with a professional to get through this. If you have been in an abusive relationship for a while, friends and family may already suspect what is going on. They want to help but they may not know how. Keep talking until you find someone who can help you feel safe. Develop A Safety Plan If you think that your boyfriend will become violent when you try to cool things off or leave him plan for your safety. Think about whatever you can do not to be alone with him or in the same vicinity. Arrange for friends and family to meet you after school or work. Walk to and from classes with other people. Let your family, roommates or answering machine screen your calls. If you are going out, make sure that someone knows where you are how to contact you, and what time you are coming back. This way if you are not back at that time you said you would be, someone can look for you or call the police. Plan for Your Safety Now I will have important numbers on me at all times. My local precinct # __________________ Counselors # _______________ Friends # ________________________ Domestic Violence Hotline # _________________________ I can tell ________________ and _________________ about my situation and ask them to call the police if they hear or see anything suspicious If I need a place to stay I can go to (list 3 places) _____________________ _________________________ ____________________________ I can avoid places that Ill see my ex such as __________________ __________________ ___________________ If I feel like going back to him I will call __________________ to talk things through and help me figure out what to do. Let the legal system help you Your boyfriends violence against you is a crime. You can go to the police, your principle, the counselor or the campus security to a file a complaint. You can also get an order of protection against him which is an order by the court that says your abuser has to stay away from you. If he violates the order then he can be arrested. Domestic violence is a serious matter and its also against the law. Join a Support Group Sometimes it helps to talk to other people who are going through the same situation as you. A support group is a safe place to share your experiences, listen to the experiences of others and figure out how to handle problems when they arise. You dont have to worry about feeling stupid or being judged because everyone in the group is going through a similar situation. To find a support group in your area speak to a counselor at school, a friend or call one of the hotlines listed in the resource section of this book and ask for a listing of places to go for help. Do positive things that boost your self-esteem Spend time with old friends and start making new ones. The simple task of keeping yourself busy will do wonders for your self-esteem. Join a community service project. You will be amazed at how much better youll feel when youre doing good deeds and helping others. Not to mention the great new friends you will make. Take a workshop. Read a good book. Listen to music no sad songs. Fix up your bedroom. Make a gift basket for a friend or family member who you havent seen for a while. The more you get out, the more youll realize how much fun life can be without him. Building a healthy relationship takes work and emotional maturity In a healthy relationship you are not afraid of your boyfriend. When one of you gets angry you find a healthy way to resolve the situation. You are able to spend time alone and do things together. You do not feel pressured to have sex. You feel appreciated and cared for.The bottom line is dangerous love can turn into deadly obsession. And there is no good reason to subject yourself to that. While it may be frightening to leave a violent relationship its far more dangerous to stay. You deserve to be treated with love and respect. You deserve to be safe. Its your life and you have the power to take control of it. Look how far youve come already. Romantic love can be exciting, passionate and sometimes addicting. But what you have to keep in mind is when he loves you to death he may send you to the grave to prove it. Using Party Favors To Say Thank You

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By David Fishman Birthday parties are designed to have a good time, they are festive and fun, and theres lots of good food and great party favors. From the time we are small children, whether we like to admit when we get older or not, when someone throws a party on our birthday its a big deal. At your child’s birthday party, you should get party favors for the birthday. If you as parents are giving a birthday party for their child, you should think about many different things. Be sure to make a full set for the birthday star. While birthday party favors may include gumball machines, cups, bowls, dough sets, princess purses and make-up and anniversary favors include items such as watches, glass set, picture frame, wallets, pocket books or purses. Often times it is easy to personalize a party favor all you need to do is wrap the object in cellophane and tie a ribbon on around it. This could be everything from the personalized treat bag to the designer costume. Many couples who are creative like to give candles, picture frames and personalized items. Almost anything can be personalized or engraved to commemorate a special occasion. It appears that party suppliers have found a way to turn the pencil or pencils plural into a small personalized gift. One of the most common acts during a baby shower is to give party favors to your guests, it is a special way of saying thank you for coming to my celebration. Keep the baby theme in mind when choosing what it is you want to give. From dough sets to cereal bowls, there is no limit what you can give depending on the theme of the party and the financial anything can be given depending on the suitability of the occasion and the financial potential of the person giving the gift. Many people like to create their own favors by creating a treat bag with many items inside, like toys, candy gift certificates and anything else that you can think of to put into the favor. Often times more should be spent on the party favors so that they can serve as a small gift for the guests. Baby shower party favors do not need to be extravagant or expensive. Any baby shower you attend today the guest will receive a party favor, this is classy way of saying thanks to your guests. Homemade baby shower party favors are great to create and fun they can be used as prizes, or party favor gift the possibilities are endless. Wedding favors aren’t just a little souvenir of the wedding: they’re also a token of appreciation to the guests for their efforts in attending the ceremony or reception and for their love and support. Traditionally the favor is used to say thanks, thanks for coming and giving me a gift and sharing this special day, wedding party favors can large or small items, one idea is to make the favors meaningful. Another popular party favor that can be given to guests is fortune cookies. When you are doing your planning, you should try to leave a little room in your budget to have your guests leave your party with a little something. Scrapbooking Anyone?

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Michelle Sweeney For those that haven’t heard of scrapbooking - where have you been? Scrapbooking is now a phenomenon and is spreading like wildfire through the craft world. The term “scrapbooking” has been in existence since 1879 and refers to “the hobby of creating compilations in scrapbook albums, such as keepsakes, pictures, periodicals, articles, etc” (Dictionary.com). But the actual history of scrapbooking itself becomes a little hazy once you start looking back through time. Although some historians claim it goes back to Ancient Greece, most history books and websites quote the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as the period in which scrapbooking was officially recognised. A resurgence took place between 1880 and 1890 making it one of the most popular crafts of that period. Scrapbooks lost their popularity in the 1940s but resurfaced again in the mid 1970s. It rapidly became a worldwide phenomenon in the late 1990s and is now a multi-billion dollar industry even gaining a mention in the Wall Street Journal. While the majority of people involved in this craft are women, it was also a popular pastime for men. Thomas Jefferson, 3rd US President; Mark Twain, author of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”; Rutherford Hayes, 19th US President ; and Andy Warhol, pop culture icon, were all ardent scrappers in their time. Thomas Jefferson kept volumes upon volumes of memorabilia, diary entries and clippings all of which can be viewed today. Mark Twain reserved the Holy Sunday to dedicate to his work and even patented a self pasting scrapbook in 1872. Rutherford Hayes was a collector of articles, photographs and incorporated details of his trips abroad into his scrapbooks. Andy Warhol is well known for his compilation of 42 scrapbooks relating to his life and his work. Kylie Rayner from All Things Scrapbooking says, “Scrapbooking is so much more than a hobby. It’s the documentation of one’s life and the preservation of one’s family history. Removing photos from old acidic albums or shoe boxes that are actually destroying the photographs within them and placing them in a safe scrapbook album, will preserve the photographs for generations to come. The ‘decoration’ of each scrapbook page ensures that the albums are viewed time and time again.” With the introduction of new computer software, scrapbooking has now entered the electronic age and is showing no decline in its popularity. If you have some spare time on your hands on your photo albums are in need of rescue, then now may be the ideal time to enrol in a class or visit your local scrapbooking store. Let Your Survey Write Your Business Plan

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Catherine Franz Most entrepreneurs first write their business plan and thendevelop their services or products. This causes them togenerate and fulfill a marketing plan that requires them toswim upstream using the backstroke. To save the stress, consider placing the business plan on hold until firstcompleting a few customer surveys. Okay, some of you aresaying, “Catherine, how can you do a survey before you knowwho your market is?” Yes, this is one challenging doubleedge sword, that is, if you’re mindset is set there. Over the years, I’ve found that everyone I’ve worked withgenerally knew what he or she wanted to sell. I don’tbelieve you are any different. This is the perfect place tostart. You have a clean slate to write on. You might be ata place of seeing it in nonspecific terms with measurabledoubts as well. That is okay, doubts will always be there, thus, allow them to be your friend instead of a foe. Itseasy to start with a gender preference — choosing eitherwomen or men as having a higher purchasing balance for whatyou are selling. If you don’t have a majority gender inmind, choose the one you feel most comfortable talking withor asking questions to. Lets dive in a little deeper, its time to start thinkingabout your surveys and what to ask. Okay, don’t fade out onme now. Generally, when people think of surveys, theyvisualize or experience the sensations of long drawn outprocesses that cost more money then they can afford or timethat they don’t have the patience for. Boy, do I rememberthose days of thinking. Lets play together on this concept of taking surveys beforewriting your business plan. At least, allow the oldperceptions to sit outside your door until you’ve finishedreading this article and learning of a new possiblealternative perspective. The perspective that surveys comefirst and don’t need to be time-consuming, money-hungry,must be done by professionals, mongrels. Take the area you want to focus on, combine with your genderpreference, and begin there. For instance, if your area islife coaching and you feel more comfortable with workingwith women you have a starting point. This doesn’t mean youwill never coach men, set those thoughts aside; they willblock your progress and keep you stuck. From knowing just this basic information, you can now createa few simple surveys in no time at all that don’t requireany money. Even if you know more specifics about yourbuyers, you might want to back it up to this point if youare stuck in generating questions. To generate this surveyplan you don’t need to know whether your focus is for aproduct or service, or even if its for electronic, telephone, or in-person delivery, at this time. The first question you want to generate and ask is what yourgender wants to buy next. If asked in narrow terms, theywill answer. If asked too broadly, they will respond with”don’t know.” If the latter, rewrite the question morespecifically, then ask again. Whenever I start, I sometimeshave to revamp my questions five or six times. Just an FYI,to help you understand that even the experts refine as theygo. Surveying is an evolutionary process. A second survey question is for people who have purchasedfrom you in the past. What are looking for next? What dothey want to accomplish in the next few months or whateverfuture terms they desire to talk about? If you don’t have any customer history, then substitute.Open the scope to what is the gender buying? What is thecross between what you offer and what they want? What dothey want to do next (short-term) that falls within yourscope? Continuing with the life coach illustration, what type ofwomen, what age areas, what type of self-development orimprovement topics are they purchasing now? What is theregular step past this? What “new” hot topics in themarketplace that meshes with your area? If you attend aworkshop, conference or seminar, examine the topic, and takenotes on the type of women attending. Record or ask theirage group. Ask a few to complete a survey while they arethere. Ask one way, then another, and create a list of no more thansix multiple choice, yes or no, questions to ask. Thencontinue to ask with whomever you meet, wherever you go.Talk with the workshop leader or conference marketing peopleand find out who they were targeting and why. If the eventis a match for you, collect copies of all their marketingmaterials for language learning. Ask friends, family members, or colleagues. Even if theydon’t think these groups fit within your current focus.Just remember not to stay off focus when doing so. If youattend a coaching school, ask other coaches that do what youwant to do. What are their clients into, what are theyselling them or what ideas have their clients told them thatthey are looking for? Your survey method you use is up to you. To ease into it,you will want to ask in the form most comfortable for you atthe time. However, caution, most everyone chooses writtenform first in order to avoid any negative responses. In aB2B survey, negative responses never occur. Everyone knowswhy a survey is important. In B2C (business to consumers)be careful not to cross the line of interrogation or toopersonal. Ask politely, with respect, and share why youwant to know. The number one rule of getting survey responses — isKISSing the questions — “keep them short, simple and asspecific as you can at the time.” Special note: Don’t usethe contraction and in your sentences. The contraction”and” creates a multiple question, stacks questions, whichconfuses readers and listeners on what you really asking. As you go through the experience of completing your surveys, new clarity will flower. The gender equation gets morespecific, the age group narrows, and the rest unfold. Oneindustry category might begin to show you where there isgreater revenue generation. Allow the data to drive youtowards the right direction. Don’t try to control or driveit yourself. That struggle will cost you dearly. If you’re survey request is in the form of writing, you canoffer something in return for an exchange of their time.Usually saved for longer surveys, you can create a rewardfor short surveys too. Its its too early in your surveyprocess to know what prospects want, offer somethinggeneric. Match the gift with the amount of time it takesthem to complete the survey. If this is the case, offersomething generic. Offer a $5 gift certificate fromAmazon.com. If local, ask you’re favorite restaurant if youcan offer a discount coupon that they will honor. There issome fr*ee portion to the amount donated on the restaurantspart because it increases their clientele list. Its time to survey. Allow patience, time, and you willwant to schedule this as a regular routine in your business.Next, plan your services and products to meet those needsand then generate your business plan around them. Instant Loans - When Facing Unexpected Financial Rip-off

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Natasha_Anderson]Natasha Anderson Loan borrowing process is a consumer driven phenomenon. The progression of technology has resulted in every process becoming immediate, instant and that is what the consumers expect. For such an anxious world there are instant loans. If you have emergency financial issues bothering you there is no better way to complement them except by [http://www.ukfinanceworld.co.uk/instant_loans.html]Instant loans.Usually a person is broke toward the end of the month. If at that time some unexpected expenditure turns up, it becomes highly difficult to maintain financial balance. Otherwise also you cant put a hold on life. Something or the other might come up and it might cost more than you have in your pocket. A lending institution will forward you instant loans to take care of money requirement during such crisis. On the net finding instant loans has become very easy and applying for it instantaneous. Instant loans are not only instant in name they are actually very promptly approved. Instant loans are defined by their ability to be approved and cash being transferred within 24hrs. Instant loans are also approved without any credit check. That sounds promising. So, a person with bad credit will find a loan option for himself without being categorized as someone with bad credit. There are certain requirements with instant loans that you need to fulfill. A regular income is mandatory. Without that it will be considerably difficult to find instant loans. Some income requirement will also have to be proved. You would have to provide confirmation that you are in the current job for specific length of time. A current valid bank account is requisite with instant loans. When you apply for instant loans, loan amount is directly credited into your bank account. Instant loans are risky for the loan lender; therefore, they are associated with high interest rates. The interest rates with instant loans are lower than credit cards. Consequently, they can be used to make repayments on high interest rates credit cards. Instead of making late payments on credit cards and increasing APR, you use instant loans to pay credit card payments. The repayment of instant loans is easy. The instant loan lender will directly withdraw money from your bank account. The due date is decided according to your convenience. Remember to direct the money in your bank account when you approach the repayment date. Instant loans are proffered with the added provision of roll over payment. You can extend your due date by talking to your instant loan lender. However, this will bear a price which is higher interest rates. An instant loan borrower should be careful before confirming due date. Instant loans are short term loans. They are simply not cut out for long term purposes. Instant loans are meant for amounts ranging from 250-1000. The loan amount can extend up to 1500 if your income can afford the repayment of that amount. The catch with payday loans is that inability to repay in time can lead to repayments amounting to thousands of pounds. Fast cash, no credit checks, can at times lead you into something that is more of a financial anomaly than a financial respite. Select the instant loans lender after research and careful comparing of APRs. Find out the terms before you decide and know about late charge et al. Make a realistic budget including payments for instant loans. And for future always make room for saving. Instant loans are not a solution to continuous cash shortage. Take as much you can afford within your next paycheck along with monthly expenditure. In fact they can be highly dangerous and lead to a vicious instant loan cycle difficult to break. To access loans in an instant is a tempting proposition. It is a good way to fill up financial gap. Use instant loans wisely to fund financial discrepancies and only if you have sufficient cash in your account on the due date. Pay back instant loans as instantaneously as you got them and you will see the monetary crisis melting away in an instant. After having herself gone through the ordeal of loan borrowing, Natasha Anderson understands the need for good quality loan advice. Online Gaming: The Untapped Niche

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Chris G Williams What’s one of the most lucrative niches that are steadily growing by the hour every day on the internet? Online Gaming! It contains a huge population of male teenagers and older males with large amounts of disposable income. It also includes a lot of high-profile female players and teams who actually receive a lot more attention than millions of the male gamers. Industry experts estimate that the global gaming industry is worth $25 billion in annual sales revenue. The main factor to the growth of this lucrative market is “Online Multiplayer Gaming”. At any given time of the day or night there are millions of people playing games online. Half of the time when these people aren’t gaming they are online surfing the internet, talking in forums and buying goods online. In recent years there have been a number of high profile tournaments and “LANS” (Local Area Networks) where cash prizes up to $120,000 have been offered to the victors. This year a number of these tournaments are actually scheduled to be televised all over the world. This shows that there is huge potential for internet marketers to tackle this “untargeted” market. This has obviously been hard to do or generally unsought of, or I as a gamer of 10 or more years would have seen opportunities and offers before. There are a number of reasons for this that I will expand on in my future articles. There have been a few big things happening in the gaming industry where online businesses have been started and made a great deal of cash. Take the “Instant Messaging”, “Voice Communication” and “Server Browser” program for gamers, “Xfire”It was recently sold for $102 Million. This was founded by Dennis “Thresh” Fong (World Champion of Quake 1) and Mike Cassidy (former CEO of Direct Hit). This program allows gamers from all over the world to search for game servers for all their favourite online games and more importantly, talk to their fellow gamers. If you are playing a game and want to talk to a friend playing another game, then there is a simple keyboard shortcut you can define yourself that you can use whilst playing to simply “IM” them and chat as you both play. It also features voice communications so you can have a number of people, all playing different games, talking to each other at the same time. Put Xfire in Google and you’ll see how popular it is with over 3,600,000 different results. This is highly impressive for a free program which makes its income from selling advertising space to companies to display in its main window. It spread through the world by word of mouth with hardly any advertising from Fong.Imagine if you could create a product or program that pulled in 1% of the hits from Google and 1% of the customers from Xfire were aware of it.Imagine what you could earn if you sold that program for $1! This is an industry that is growing every day. The online gamers on the PC side are prepared to spend thousands of dollars on their PCs, a single graphics card could cost them $600 or more. Now with gaming consoles being hooked up to the internet, the online appeal of gaming is growing every day and so are a whole generation of internet users. They obviously have the money to spend so why don’t you target that audience? The other thing to remember is new games are released every day. There are so many niches within this niche as you could solely focus on one game and its community and still reach a huge audience from all over the world! Chris Williams is a Gamer with 10 years of experience in online gaming in game. He has been using niche marketing to boost his internet marketing business online. His new site teaches marketers how to effectively research a niche and learn how to profit from it.Niche Marketing Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Chris_G_Williams http://EzineArticles.com/?Online-Gaming:-The-Untapped-Niche&id=459720 buy soma pill purchase soma on line buy soma cheap overseas buy soma online no prescription

What is a Reverse Email Search?

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Amit Mehta So somebody has contacted you; he/she has provided an email address or an instant messenger user name but you have no idea who it belongs to. Well, then it’s time to conduct a reverse email search! A reverse email search scans an array of consumer, Internet and email databases as well as publicly available records to determine if a connection can be found between an email address and a name or address of a specific individual. If there is more than one name associated with the email address you have, then this will be revealed by the reverse email search too. Any user of the Internet leaves a trail behind that makes a reverse email search possible. For instance, keying in information in various websites may point to your identity, while your IP address often reveals your location. This information could be used by anyone (sometimes, unfortunately, for detrimental ends such as identity fraud and theft). So now that you know that a reverse email search is so easy and effortless to do, it would be wise to exercise caution with the websites you visit and the information that your reveal about yourself. Why Conduct a Reverse Email Search One reason why you might conduct a reverse email search is if you receive tons of junk and spam email in your Inbox. Sometimes, these online messages carry viruses, spyware and bugs that damage your personal computer or track your online activities. As such, finding out the sender of these emails will help you in requesting that your name be taken off their distribution lists. And if push comes to shove, you can file a complaint with authorities and provide them the real identify of the party sending you junk email. Another reason for doing a reverse email search is to check the validity of an email address. Over time, it is likely that an email address is no longer in use and will be closed and discontinued. However, somebody may tap into this email address without the original owner knowing it and use it for their own purposes. In some occasions, the email address may even be assigned to a new user and performing a reverse email search delivers the certainty that you are sending your email to the intended recipient. This is extremely important if you are sending over confidential documents. There is no better medium to do a reverse email search than online since all the resources are already on the Internet. The likelihood that a reverse email search can be conducted manually through offline databases is almost like searching for a needle in a haystack. This is because the filtering and scanning capabilities of an online reverse email search remain unsurpassed compared to other kinds of database searches that are conducted without the aid of the Internet. So, what email address do you want to verify today? Want to Know the Top Sites for Reverse Email Search? Water - The Drink Of Life

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Ashok Malhotra Where there is water there is life. Without water there is no existence. Light, Air and Water are basic to the creation and sustenance of life. Indeed one can live much longer without food than without water. Most humans may not survive for more than a few days without water. The production of food itself is dependent on water. If sometimes we focus more attention on food than water, it is because nature has been so enormously graceful in providing us with near unlimited supplies of this elixir of life. But it is not so everywhere on earth, and need not remain so unless we learn how to use this precious resource with care and responsibility. Even when water is available in abundance, its improper consumption or improper use leads to several health problems. It is because of the importance of water that it plays such a central role in the ancient religions of the world. Descriptions of hell and heaven are rarely complete without a description of the quality of water that is available for drinking. A major index of the quality of life of different parts of our planet is directly linked to the quality and quantity of available water. The greatest reservoirs of water are the oceans. Although ocean water is not directly suitable to drink because of its high salt content, it is the source from where all our water emanates. The earths oceans cover three fourths of its surface. Clouds are created from the water that evaporates from this ocean surface. This returns to land in the form of rain or snow. Each year about 80 billion-acre feet, in the form of rain and snow fall on the continents. Of this water rivers, glaciers and ground water seepage return about a third to the sea. The remaining returns to the atmosphere to replenish the existing ground and surface water supplies. Of this abundance of water, however, less than 3% is fit for human use . Seawater contains so much dissolved solid that it is unsuitable for drinking even for a severely dehydrated persons. Persons marooned at sea for prolonged periods have learnt to their peril that even though sea water may appear to quench thirst somewhat, it eventually leads to a greater dehydration of the body than prevailed before drinking it. Three percent is not much, but it is all we have and all we had probably since the birth of our planet or soon after it. It simply recycles over and over again. Of around three hundred and quarter million cubic miles of water on earth, only about 3% is fresh water. Three fourths of it is frozen. Only 1/2 of 1% of all water is underground. About 1/50th of 1% of all water is found in lakes and streams. The average human is about 70% water. Next to air, water is the most important element to the subsistence of human life. What do we know about it? Most of us are so accustomed to drawing water from our taps that we quickly forget that our faucets are connected by long miles of pipe to a supply somewhere. An everlasting if not continuous flow of water is assumed to be an inalienable right. When we do think about water we usually visualize a clean clear gushing river flowing through a lush green landscape. Such a picture is rapidly becoming a historical or imaginary one. The sacred river Jamuna flowing through the capital city of India is a mass of seething, filthy froth at the time of writing this. Some scientists asked to measure its contamination level have reported that it is not possible to do so because it is more or less fully sewage, not water. The sad fact is that millions in this city drink daily from this very source after incomplete treatment. Scientifically no water in nature is completely pure. Pure water exists only in a laboratory. It is difficult to produce and even harder to maintain. Water is a “universal solvent”, no matter what it touches, it starts to dissolve that substance, thereby contaminating or enriching itself. Nonetheless, the purest water is not the tastiest or healthiest one to drink. Water containing beneficial minerals nourishes life. If we mix a spoonful of salt in water we can quickly see the dissolving nature of water. If we place a piece of metal such as silver or copper in water, we cannot see this dissolving action. Nevertheless, a microscopic part of these materials also dissolves in water. This is just as well, because if larger quantities of metals such as copper dissolve, then the water will become poisonous. Different materials have different degrees of solubility in water. Nature has been immensely wise in this respect. Materials generally found in nature that could be poisonous to living creatures often display a low degree of solubility in water. However, in modern times the use of man made chemicals has become more and more common. Many of these dissolve quickly in water, even reaching underground sources. Most have adverse consequences on plant, animal and human life. The problem is when the minerals or other contaminants are of a harmful nature. If the degree of contamination is not of a critical kind, it may not lead to a fatal or serious consequence, but it will probably lead to lower levels of health and vitality. Water may be classified broadly as of two types. The first is described as “surface water”. This includes oceans, lakes, rivers, snow and ice. The second is “ground water”. This is water from under the surface of the earth in different geological formations. The water enters the formation via percolation of water from precipitation and direct seepage from surface water sources. Large ground water holdings are called “aquifers”. At places water that has entered the earths surface at one location may emerge as an underground spring at another location. Surface water is just what the name implies; it is water found in a river, lake or other surface impoundment. This water is usually not very high in mineral content, and many times is called “soft water” even though it usually is not. Surface water is exposed to many different contaminants, such as animal wastes, pesticides, insecticides, industrial wastes, algae and other organic materials. Even surface water found in a pristine mountain stream possibly contains Giardia or Coliform resulting from the feces of wild animals, and should be boiled or disinfected by some means prior to drinking. In the populated Himalayan regions of India, epidemics of Cholera have been common and there have been occasions when health regulations have required outside visitors to get inoculated prior to a visit. Ground Water is that which is trapped beneath the ground. Rains that soak into the ground, rivers that disappear beneath the earth, melting snow are but a few of the sources that recharge the supply of underground water. Because of the many sources of recharge, ground water may contain any or all of the contaminants found in surface water as well as the dissolved minerals it picks up during it’s long stay underground. Waters that contain dissolved minerals; such as calcium and magnesium above certain levels are considered “hard water”. Water is considered a “solvent”, i.e., over time it can break down the ionic bonds that hold most substances together. It tends to dissolve and ‘gather up’ small amounts of whatever it comes in contact with. For instance, in areas of the world where rock such as limestone, gypsum, fluorspar, magnetite, pyrite and magnesite are common, well water is usually very high in calcium content, and therefore considered “hard”. At other places ground water may develop the qualities to stain clothes or an unpleasant taste due to the presence of excessive dissolved iron. Groundwater from some sources in Western India has been found to contain excessive fluorine leading to diseases of the bone and tragic health consequences. Normally, surface water is soft and underground water is hard. This means that the underground water has more minerals or solids dissolved in it. Distilled water is the purest form of water with no minerals whatsoever in it. Incase one has the choice and is unsure; soft water is the better one to choose. A mixture of both is better provided that hard water has only beneficial minerals dissolved in it. Distilled water is much too bland for regular consumption. Incase, that is the only safe water available for drinking in a specific situation, then adding a pinch of salt and sugar to it can easily enrich it. Water supply is one of mankind’s most basic problems. It is becoming more serious every year with increase of population and industrialization. There is an urgent and ever growing need for water that is pure enough for human consumption and good health. Added to this is the increasing contamination of our fresh water resources due to rapid industrialization. Even in developed countries such as USA, the quality of water has become a significant problem. The most widespread problem is the supply of clean, safe, healthy drinking water. In several parts of the world water supplies are being used up at faster rates than they can be replenished. Major rivers, by the time they find their way to the sea are nothing more than a polluted solution. In several areas water is rationed as the demands for water steadily increase. Large urban communities have their water supplies metered and commercial, industrial and residential customers pay high fees for excessive usage. Excessive use of chemicals in agriculture and industry pollutes both surface and ground water. Thus on the one hand whereas industrialization is helping to improve the quality of life, on the other, it has worsened it as far as the quality of water s concerned. Only a small part of fresh water is consumed for drinking. In developed countries, total community water use is around 175 gallons per capita per day. Less than one gallon of this being used for human consumption that is cooking or drinking water purposes. Less than 1 percent of all freshwater usage is for drinking water purposes. Domestic functions, irrigation, etc consume the other 99 percent. The majority goes to commercial and industrial applications. Production of electricity requires the use of copious amounts of fresh water. The water used in the boilers of thermal power plants has to be much purer than water required for drinking even to prevent serious problems in the production of steam. Therefore such plants are located in the vicinity of rivers or lakes. Whenever the question of conservation of water is raised, it must be remembered that except through rare chemical processes water cannot be destroyed. It merely moves from one place to another and water is constantly in motion through nature. Therefore, we need not be concerned if we use copious amounts of water for any of our needs. The water we use does not leave our planet. It remains with us forever, for further use in future. Water conservation is not about reducing the use of water but about its proper use and about maintaining its quality. Seawater is of little direct use for humans as well as plant and animal life. Nations facing a shortage of fresh water should first pay attention to the fresh water that returns to the sea through both surface and underground rivers. If the same water is collected in ponds, lakes and dams it remains either as fresh water on land or serves to enhance ground water reservoirs and streams. Countries such as India that loose a large fraction of its fresh water to the sea, especially during the monsoon season should consider the creation of more inland reservoirs whenever the opportunity arises. These reservoirs if combined with fresh water fish farming can rapidly pay for the cost of their creation. In recent years there has been much talk of harvesting rainwater, that is collecting water and directing it to underground reservoirs. In areas where such water flows into rivers that flow to the sea, this makes good sense. However, in areas where such rivers do not exist, the effort of harvesting water may at times be futile. Nature is already doing it for free. Even the water that is lost by surface evaporation is not really lost. It returns as rain or dew. Another area where futile efforts are often made is in the conservation of ground water. From time to time, government agencies consider limiting and licensing the use of ground water. In many cases this is completely unnecessary. Drawing water from the ground in some cases even prevents the loss of the same water to the oceans. It may even help to improve the water quality by reducing salinity of the water (except in coastal areas), which develops due to long storage inside the ground. Water that is pumped out is once again not destroyed. Much of it returns to the ground. All that happens is that its location is changed. When it is pumped out in excess the water table falls and exercises an automatic control that does not require bureaucratic expense. Ashok Malhotra is an International Educator.
