Do You Really Want to Lose Weight?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Dinorah Blackman Although were living in an age when there is a thousand times more information on health and nutrition and weight loss, there have never been more overweight people in history! This doesnt make a lot of sense, something is terribly wrong. Could it be that the diets are designed so youll always have to keep buying them to look your best? Can it be that foods are prepared in such a way that you become addicted to them and cant stop eating even though you keep getting fatter? Is it that we are so emotionally messed up that we treat food like a pacifier? Or is it a deadly combination of all the above and more? Even though skin-and-bones models stare back at us from the pages of magazines and TV screens, they have no power to encourage the uncomfortably full figured to shed the extra pounds. If anything, the average overweight woman takes one look at their tiny measurements and heads straight to the kitchen in total disgust at her inability to fit into a size 4 miniskirt. Criticism wont do it and all the statistics wont either. Sad to say, most diets dont work; it doesnt matter whose name is attached to it. And exercise alone has little effect. On the other hand, the combination of both healthy eating habits and regular exercise seems to do the trick for some. But the truth is that unless you identify the culprit that caused you to put on all that weight, chances are that every new idea will work for a time and then youll slide right back down into the fat zone. 1. Why do you want to lose weight? Is it because youre convinced that you need to be healthier or is because you caught your husband staring at a really slim woman? Sit down and take the time to identify the real reason behind your desire to become thinner because unless youre doing it for yourself, won over by the promise of a healthier future, its going to be a lot harder to shed the extra pounds. A recently married young woman commented to me the other day that she needed to lose a serious amount of weight. I asked her where she had gotten that idea. Her answer was that people were telling her that it wasnt a good thing to get pregnant while she was fat. I then asked her: what do you think? Her immediate answer was I think I look great, so does my husband! I smiled at her enthusiasm then encouraged her to be herself and not fall into the trap of living according to other peoples opinions. 2. What are you willing to do to get rid of the extra weight? I have listened to many women complain that they really need to lose 10 or 20 or more pounds. My answer is always direct: become a vegetarian and exercise for an hour every day. Most of them flinch at my suggestion. Give up chicken? Never! One woman declared with eyes open wide. Well, needless to say shes still sporting 50 additional pounds in all the wrong places. Unless youre completely willing to do whatever it takesstop complaining! 3. When did you start gaining the weight? Growing up chubby is still no excuse for your current size. Contrary to popular belief, you dont inherit fat. What you do inherit are unhealthy eating habits. Pregnancy is also not justification for carrying around extra weight. A woman I met was still using that sorry excuse even though her youngest child was already in preschool! Take a look at your past and try to determine when it was that you lost control and write it down. That information might come in handy if youre faced with the same situation in the future. My next door neighbor is a beautiful petite young woman. One day I saw her and almost fainted; she had gained about 40 pounds in a month! Apparently she was going through some emotional turmoil and ate her cares away. 4. Have you cleaned up the inside? Its one thing to look at yourself in the mirror and say Girl, you are fine! Lets see how good youre going to look with 5 pounds less. And a totally different thing to go: You are a fat cow! Youd better take off some pounds if you want to look human again! If you constantly berate yourself with hateful words youll have a harder time getting rid of the pounds. Always remember that your thoughts control your actions. So pay attention to how you talk to yourself. If you have fallen into the habit of saying mean and hurtful things at your reflection, its time to stop. Also, check to see if youre harbouring any resentment, unforgiveness, envy or distrust. Negative feelings have a way of boycotting your efforts of self-improvement. I know some of you might be thinking easy for her to say, shes probably skinny! Well Im not. I struggled with weight for a while and I know that theres a lot more to losing it than fad diets and aerobics. Vegetarianism and a one-hour brisk walk every evening has worked for me. I encourage you to find what will do the trick for you.Lastly, it doesnt matter what size you are, always remember that you are a wonderful human being. The Considerations Of Being An Older Woman Dating Younger Men

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Cheryl Ashbrook Whilst there are many advantages to being an older woman dating a younger man, as demonstrated by famous couples such as Francesca Annis and Ralph Fiennes or Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, there are also some drawbacks which do need to be considered, addressed and overcome. As an older woman dating a younger man you may feel that society does not accept you and people whisper words like ‘desperate’ or ’sad’. Neither will be true. In fact most people will not notice the age gap at all and assume you are of similar ages and if they do comment it probably means they are just jealous; either way it’s none of their business. Sadly, friends and family on both sides may also react in unexpected ways and have strong opinions about the relationship, sometimes quite negative ones. They may be concerned it ‘will not last’ or ‘he just wants your money’ etc. Be careful not to let others preconceptions put you off what could be a very rewarding relationship. You will probably find that, at some stages in the relationship at least, you are at different stages in your life. As an older woman you may feel you have already been there and done that when your younger partner wants to try something. In this situation it’s important to revert back to that initial excitement and try and see a situation with new eyes rather than adopt a cynical air that could make it difficult for your younger partner to suggest things. Remember being more mature does sometimes require you to think that way and act appropriately! A younger partner may want children, and whilst this may not be impossible, it may need careful consideration, especially if you already have children. It is certainly something that should be discussed if it is raised when the relationship reaches a suitably serious stage. As an older woman you may be quite settled and established both financially and career wise but you may have to accept that your younger partner is not. They may still be climbing the career ladder or establishing their financial independence and you will have to consider if and how you integrate your financial positions and careers where and when relevant. You may also be thinking in the long term when you are old and maybe not so attractive and your partner is still young. Remember though, having a younger partner will keep you younger, women tend to live longer than men and can age better so maybe this is the new way of the world to even things out and keep couples together in old age! An older woman dating younger men can have a fantastic lifestyle, be made to feel younger, even more confident and have more fun than with a much older partner so dont let your doubts stop you. At the end of the day any relationship must be considered on its relative merits and if you meet someone, have a good time together and choose to spend time together then age, or other peoples opinions should not matter. Your and his happiness are the most important things to consider so make your decisions based on that. The Battle of Positioning — Altruism or Paranoia?

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Don Price Competition in the past has embodied such beliefs of kill or get killed which has fostered paranoia with many individuals and companies. Our competitive thinking has been to: defend, hoard, knock off competition, defame and win at any cost. A view propagated by Intels Andy Grove that, only the paranoid survive. Do we prosper more from paranoia or can we actually prosper more from altruistic behavior by entering into relationships of reciprocation. Moving through the first decade of the millennium finds that we are experiencing trends of new competitive thinking that is largely driven by Internet marketing. Affiliate programs, partnering, free, value creation, and a host of reciprocal marketing strategies are being used for driving consumers to patronize online business. The operable word for the consumer is reciprocal. The consumer is driven by, I will give you my business in return for value over and above cost and time. Speed, convenience, quality, accessibility, enjoyment, aesthetics and problem solving solutions are the value creations that customers look for today. While altruism is surfacing as an edge for marketers there are other influencing strategies that lure the consumer, such as increasing amounts of PR (public relations) coupled with fully integrated off-line, on-line marketing. Just as magicians or illusionists mesmerize their audience with words and props, we seduce the consumer with an assortment of means and marketing weapons. Integrated marketing plays a vital role for small companies and Multinational Corporations. Think of your marketing weapons as your magic kit for shaping your message with a multifaceted approach that promotes and elevates your business for high visibility and generates an enthusiastic response in the marketplace. Before deciding which weapons are best to influence, motivate and capture your audience, dont lose sight of your primary goal: to sell your products and services. Planning is essential, however you need to know for what it is you are planning. Yogi Berra said: If you dont know where youre going, you could wind up someplace else. Knowing where you are going will have to include the Internet. The days of not being on-line have gone. The anatomy of todays multifaceted approach to positioning requires the integration of on-line marketing into your planning. Business Weeks June 28 cover story concludes: Any company that relies on the traditional sales force will now have to do some soul-searching. Companies are finding they need new skills, from logistics and distribution to marketing. The landscape is rapidly changing for all business. Here are some key points for growing your business. Be more targeted in selecting your niche markets. Fine more diverse ways to sell goods and services, maintain customer loyalty and confidence while building brand equity. Growth of your business may require more altruism in your marketing mix, as evident today. PR will play a vital role in the growth of your business. Small and large businesses need to use PR to rapidly define a product concept or brand and for luring consumers. PR and technology accelerates direct selling, making it faster and more cost effective to reach customers locally and globally. Use media releases for optimizing your marketing campaigns. Welcome to Princeton, New Jersey, One of America’s Best Places to Live

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Lizzy Scully With winter snows dissolved, springtime announces its arrival to Princeton, NJ, by an explosion of creamy-pink magnolia blossoms. Students in this thriving university town come out in droves this time of year, toting backpacks on bicycles or buses and heading off to one of their favorite hangouts. At PJs Pancake House, the aroma of warm, sweet maple syrup oozing down a stack of golden brown flapjacks will awaken the sleepiest of patrons. Another favorite evening spot is the Trump Brewery where ice cold, frothy ale awaits. The towns historical flavor whets the appetite as well. After all, General George Washington shouted orders to his troops here at the Battle of Princeton. Many buildings on campus resemble those from the Elizabethan era with their castle-like facades. Variegated ivy creeps silently but abundantly, engulfing its surroundings by seasons end, leaving only telltale signs of a structures existence. In the evening, spotlights illuminate Georgian-style Nassau Hall, showing off its numerous archways, towers, and cupolas, as well as the offices of the universitys president. Historical buildings and sites are not limited to campus. Battlefield State Park takes visitors back to the time of the Revolutionary War, while Palmer Square, which was built downtown in 1937, houses colonial-style brick and stone buildings with trendy shops, restaurants, and galleries of contemporary art. Additional works of art can be found at Princetons Art Museum, as well as throughout campus. The works of Calder, Picasso, and others dot the campus and are a part of the John B. Putnam, Jr., Memorial Collection of contemporary sculpture. For the sports enthusiast, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, and playing fields are but a few of the amenities available for the active lifestyle. Those who prefer the great indoors can watch professional baseball and ice hockey being played at nearby Waterfront Park or Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton. The excellent recreational and cultural offerings only accentuate the educational and economic opportunities here. In this thriving town, where more than two-thirds of residents have college degrees, the average household income is in the top 10% of the country and the unemployment rate is significantly below the national average. Its no surprise that Money magazine describes Princeton as one of the 100 best places to live in America. Biofeedback Therapy the Path to Healing and Living a Healthier Life

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Michelle Toole You probably have heard about Biofeedback Therapy. And may even have an idea of how this form of therapy helps improve your health. But before I tell you more about this technique, I have to tell you how much I truly believe that without it I would not have made the strides in my health that I have made so far. Using this technique daily as part of my holistic health care strategy has helped me to reset my Autonomic Nervous system and to start regaining control of my life. What is Biofeedback Therapy? In simple terms it is a technique used to improve your health by learning to control certain internal bodily processes that normally occur involuntarily, such as heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and skin temperature. These are referred to as the autonomic or involuntary functions of the body. When using the Biofeedback method, the activities of the Autonomic Nervous System are measured with electrodes. They are then displayed on a computer monitor allowing you to see how certain actions such as laughter, stress and even love can affect your body systems. The monitor provides you with feedback giving you a better understanding of the workings of your body. And once you begin to understand the information you can start to gain control over these involuntary activities. I was first introduced to Biofeedback Therapy when I was a child. I started having severe migraine headaches when I was about six years old. My mother had always been open to looking into alternative methods of healing and had a strong belief that we had the power to heal ourselves. After visiting my general physician and getting a clean bill of health she suggested Biofeedback. Back then Biofeedback was very limited. They placed electrodes all over your head and on your fingers and you lay in a chair for an hour trying to relax while this loud piercing sound was blasting in your ears. The goal was to control the noise so that the more relaxed you were the quieter the noise would get until you eventually made it stop. This was achieved by slowing down my heart rate, relaxing my muscles and maintaining my body temperature. Basically by putting my body and mind in a state of total relaxation. It took a while but I finally got to the point that I could make the noise stop a few minutes after I lay down. I was able to successfully control my migraines by using this technique. Thankfully technology has taken Biofeedback to a whole new level. Computers have allowed for the development of visually interactive programs that are almost like a video game. Using the biofeedback game you travel, experience great journeys and practice relaxation techniques along the way. With this program you re-train or as I believe reset your Autonomic System through challenges and validating experiences. For example by lowering your heart rate, while connected to the electrodes you can literally make a ball, on your computer monitor gently rise up to the sky or by both increasing and decreasing your heart rate you take aim with a bow and arrow and hit a target. It is truly an amazing experience. The three most commonly used forms of Biofeedback Therapy are: Electromyography (EMG), which measures muscle tension Thermal biofeedback, which measures skin temperature Neurofeedback or electroencephalography (EEG), which measures brain wave activity And there are many different Biofeedback programs on the market today. Some are portable so you can use them anywhere and others you need to be on a computer with the electrodes hooked to your USB port. I personally use a program called The Journey to Wild Divine that integrates the power of a healing journey with innovative human-computer technology to help you cultivate an enhanced sense of self, soul awareness and ultimate health. It is a highly advanced, stimulating and interactive program that I find not only helpful but enjoyable. Deepak Chopra, MD, who worked in conjunction with the creators of this program says The Journey to Wild Divine allows people to influence what is happening in their body, in their mind, and in the world they create everyday. I would also recommend the HeartMath Institute Freeze-Framer program. The Freeze-Framers heart rhythm monitor was developed to help people recover more quickly from health challenges as well as prevent, manage and reverse the negative effects of stress. Basically the Institute says The program teaches you how to get your head and heart in sync. Christiane Northrup, MD, author of the best seller Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom, says Nearly every disease or illness Ive seen or treated in two decades of my medical practice could have been improved or even cured had my patients or I known how to access the physical power of our hearts intelligence. HeartMath is the owners manual weve been waiting for to help us recognize and use our hearts energy to help heal our bodies and our lives. If you choose you can also use a qualified Biofeedback therapist. If you decide to use a practitioner, your therapy sessions will vary based on the disorder or disease you are dealing with. A person with a non-neurological problem may be seen an average of six to eight treatment sessions over a three month period. Generally your sessions would be scheduled weekly and decrease in frequency as you improve. But the real work happens at home. If you do not practice what you have learned daily, like anything else you are not likely to see improvement. It is important to take what is learned in therapy sessions and practice, practice, practice. Repetition of the learned techniques and patterns are absolutely critical to successful Biofeedback Therapy regardless of which method is applied. The amount of research available supporting the use of Biofeedback Therapy is quite overwhelming. I am a little surprised that it has yet to make its way into mainstream medicine. Studies are showing this therapy to be effective for a wide range of disorders. For example, Biofeedback shows considerable promise for the treatment of urinary incontinence, which affects over 15 million Americans. Many people prefer this technique over medicine because of the lack of side effects. One early study found that Biofeedback improves bladder function and reduces symptoms of urinary incontinence by up to 94 percent. Other research has shown Biofeedback to ease the symptoms of Raynaud’s disease and to reduce pain, morning stiffness, and the number of tender points in people with Fibromyalgia. Studies have even shown it to help people who suffer from insomnia fall asleep. It has also been shown to improve behavior in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It seems there is no end to what ailments Biofeedback can help. “Biofeedback may also be useful for the following health problems: anorexia nervosa anxietyasthmaautismback painbed wettingchronic painconstipationdepressiondiabetesfecal incontinenceepilepsy and related seizure disordershead injurieshigh blood pressurelearning disabilitiesmotion sicknessmuscle spasmssexual disorders, including pain with intercoursespinal cord injuries” Ultimately whether you are dealing with the stress of daily life or living with a chronic illness, Biofeedback therapy is a great asset to anybodys healthy living plan. Anniversary Gifts - Seventeenth Anniversary

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Michael Russell Looking for an anniversary gift for your seventeenth anniversary? Well, if that’s the case, it’s time to look around the house. Why? Because this is the year to buy furniture. And since this is such a broad category, you will certainly have more than enough ideas to choose from. Need help in deciding? These tips should give you a hand. Since there is no traditional gift idea for this anniversary, the list makers were kind enough to at least give us a broad enough category so that we don’t go crazy trying to figure out what to get our spouse. Still, there is some thought that needs to go into purchasing this anniversary treasure. For starters, look around your house and pick out all the pieces of furniture that have probably outlived their usefulness. After 17 years of marriage, you are certain to have at least a couple of pieces that are pretty much on their way out. Make a list of all of these pieces. This doesn’t mean you are going to replace them all. This is just to give you something to choose from. The next thing you want to do is look through your house and make a note of the things that you don’t have. Maybe you always wanted to get a china cabinet, but because you didn’t actually get any china until a couple of years ago, you never bothered. Make a note of all these “missing” pieces and add them to the list. What you then want to do is decide which is more important. If you’re couch is falling apart and is about to be something that you can no longer sit in, it is probably more important that you get a replacement couch than something that you have been living without for 17 years. Another year without it is probably not going to kill you. After your list is complete, the next thing you want to do is take a look at your budget and see what you can afford. If you’ve decided to go with replacing an old piece that is falling apart but only have a couple hundred bucks to spend, then getting a brand new couch that can easily cost you a grand or more is probably out of the question unless you can find a good deal somewhere. However, for those of you with big bucks to spend, there is nothing that will bring a bigger smile to you wife’s face than to surprise her with a brand new living room set. That’s right, the whole set. Coffee table, end tables, couch and whatever else you want to fit in it. Just make sure that the delivery men come on a day when she is not going to be home so she can really be surprised when she walks through the front door and sees that her living room is completely new. Certainly, with a category like furniture, you should have no trouble finding your spouse a gift that will make an impression and last at least another 17 years. What is TMS for Treatment of Depressive Tendencies?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Foras Aje Dealing with depression these days is something that is of uttermost importance to millions of people. With an arsenal of options to accomplishing this feat, it is of significant importance that all methods of treating depressive symptoms should be adequately addressed for the edification of the applicable. To this effect, today we shall be discussing TMS for treatment for depressive tendencies. And what exactly is TMS? Well, it stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and it works by activating certain parts of the brain using electrical energy passed through a coil of wires to create a powerful magnetic field. It is often given without surgery or even sedation and its makers state that the whole process is virtually painless and takes less than 20 minutes a day for several weeks, even though some doctors claim to see positive results in about a week or so after the use of TMS on depression patients. Its supporters claim that TMS has almost no side effects if any and go further to say that one of the benefits of TMS is its accuracy. Furthermore, due to its non-invasive nature, TMS generally doesnt hurt even when performed on awake, alert adults. However, studies have shown that about one in five people will develop a mild headache after they receive TMS, but more than often that minor discomfort goes away with aspirin or acetaminophen. Though it is still being studied and used more as trial procedure, it might be safe to say that using TMS for treatment for depression is something that perhaps only the rich may very well be able to afford if and when it becomes approved. So suffice it to say one will do well to keep dealing with depression via more known and basic alternatives, at least for now. Five Ways for Women to Accelerate Their Career

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Roxanne Batson While the corporate world may no longer be a man’s game, the sad truth is that businesswomen are still paid less than men for the same positions, and fewer women than men fill the top positions. Further, when a woman is assertive and works hard to get ahead, it can be misinterpreted whereas this behavior is admired and rewarded in men. What can women do to get ahead without putting out the wrong impression? A woman can do many things to prove and market herself in the business world. Supporting one another in these endeavors is also important. Network, Network, Network You’ve heard it before, but it’s so true–the more people you know, the better opportunities you’ll discover. Most companies fill positions through inside sources. You’re much less likely to find your dream job through the classifieds. Moreover, if that promotion keeps eluding you, advancement through another company may be the answer. Networking gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism by helping others and providing information as you are able. People remember these things, and your name might pop up when an opportunity comes along. Get involved with business functions and professional organizations. Take on a volunteer position through the organization or serve as a contact person for new members. The more people you know the better. Determine Your Niche What do you do best? Why do you do this better, or how are you able to fill a need that others cannot? Just as a specialty store offers products or services that the mainstream department stores do not, so too can you (and should you) develop a skill set that sets you apart. Are you an engineer with strong communication and social skills? Do you have particularly strong leadership, analytical, or outstanding project management skills? If so, use these to your advantage. Volunteer to take on projects that will let you shine (and if they’re the types of projects that no one else wants, that’s even better). When the project goes well, be sure that people know about it. This doesn’t mean that you walk around the office bragging about it to everyone, but it does mean that you get the word out. Most projects require some type of follow-up or project summary, which is the perfect way to summarize everything that went well and your role in the project’s success. Script and Practice Your Elevator Speech An elevator speech is a brief summary (about thirty seconds or so) designed to market yourself, outlining who you are and what you do. This is used in networking, but also “on the spot,” when you suddenly find yourself in a situation where someone wants to know what you are all about. The purpose of the elevator speech is to have something prepared ahead of time for these situations. This way you’re not caught off guard, and you know exactly what to say. Yes, it’s a memorized summary of your career and experience, but of course, you can ad lib as necessary. Also, be aware of the proper times to use your elevator speech. As a professional, you understand that some situations are inappropriate for this kind of chat. However, many businesswomen hold back when the time is right. If you have something prepared, this is a real confidence booster when the opportunity presents itself. Be a Walking Resume Many people don’t like the idea of bragging–or more correctly–listing accomplishments and achievements on their resume because the idea of tooting their own horn makes them uncomfortable. The simple fact is, if you don’t toot your own horn, no one will do it for you. This means that you not only develop a powerful paper resume, but also that you make sure others are aware of your achievements on a regular basis. While this may sound like you’ll be a walking braggart, it doesn’t need to be this way. For example, schedule regular appointments with your boss to review current and upcoming work. While there, be sure to tell her about your successes. Annual reviews are great, but your co-workers and superiors are not going to remember everything; a few reminders along the way can work to your advantage. Keep as much of this in writing as possible. Document the hard numbers, comments from clients and coworkers, and anything else that supports your success. When clients or coworkers congratulate you on your work, ask for it in writing. If this makes you uncomfortable, say that you want to add it to the project file for future reference of what went well so that it can be repeated on future assignments. Keep Moving Forward In nearly every profession, those at the top say one of the primary reasons they ended up where they are is because they didn’t give up. The millionaire mindset is one of not giving up. Persistence is key. There are always setbacks, and unfortunately, women have more hurdles to overcome from the outset. These can be viewed as negatives or a challenge. If you value yourself and your contributions, you will be better prepared to handle the setbacks. People will not always support your goals, you won’t always get the promotion, and you won’t always love your job. You will struggle with how to overcome challenges, balance your work and family life, and how to move ahead while maintaining positive, proactive relationships. However, leading women entrepreneurs, women business owners, and women in leadership roles all have one thing in common: they never quit. ******************************** Roxanne is managing partner of WomenCorp an international womens leadership development company that provides experiential learning programs for women who want to succeed in business and life. You could have pens, t-shirts, stickers or flyers with your website and logo imprinted to give as gifts. Always include your business info in your emails, letters, checks, post cards and other correspondence. Make a category on your website for free downloads. Could be in the form of latest news, updates, information, helpful hints or tips and tricks. In a nutshell, companies ride on the idea that if people like the content of a media they will pass it on to their friends and family. They sponsor the certain media, such as a cool flash game, funny video, amusing story and such, which one may pass on to another with the company brand or logo or the products description or any other content to help promote the company or its product. Write a review on your products and give your opinion or experience. Offer as a free download or report to your visitors. When using classified ads dont try to sell your service from the ad. Offer more info or free details and then place a link to your site, email address or auto responder. Send out press releases to various publications introducing your service. Describe yourself and your business and anything unique or special about your particular brand of products. Bottom line. Get the word out. Information can be given for free to your prospects. Try using this proven technique to capture your share of business.
