Big “Buts” Sabotage Weight Loss, Health and Fitness (Part 3 of 12)

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Dr. Leslie Van Romer Yeah, But I Will Be Cured Why bother changing the way I eat? you may ask yourself. If I do get some horrible disease, someone or something will cure me, and I will go about my merry way. After all, you may think, we do live in the richest, most sophisticated, most medically-savvy country in the world with the best doctors, the best research, and the best facilities. Even if there isnt a cure now, there must be a cure right around the bend. In the 1970s, President Nixon proclaimed the war on cancer, and cancer would be conquered by the year of our countrys bicentennial, 1976. Here it is almost 30 years later and, with only rare exceptions, cancer is anything but cured. If you have any doubts, just open your eyes and watch people getting picked off one by one by cancer.Look at breast cancer. In the 1960s, 1 in 20 women died of breast cancer; now the statistic is about 1 in 8. Prostate cancer has comparable increase in numbers. Approximately 1 million Americans die every year of heart disease, usually undetected for years. Diabetes type 2, a disease directly related to a lifetime of poor food choices, weight, and lack of exercise, is skyrocketing right along side of obesity; obesity not just in adults but in our children. Usually, by the time you know that a disease or condition is threatening your health and very life, there is no magical cure, and there will never be a cure; only so-called management. If you are very lucky, a complete shift in eating and lifestyle could rebuild your body and health and reverse some diseases and conditions. Your best health and life insurance is not in a pie-in-the-sky cure, but in prevention. Dr. Leslie Van Romer is a health motivational speaker, writer, and lifestyle coach. How To Make Your Own Gift Baskets

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Angel Estrella One of the most famous gifts for Easter is that of a gift basket filled with chocolates, toys and fun little items for children to enjoy. As you get older, perhaps your children grow up and there is no longer that joy of helping the Easter bunny put together special holiday gift baskets. That doesnt mean, however, that you cannot continue the tradition with other holidays and special occasions. Christmas is a wonderful time to make your own gift baskets and can be a terrific way to add a personal touch to any present. If you know a woman who loves to pamper herself, consider purchasing a nice basket and adding a bottle of her favorite bubble bath, body lotion, perfume and anything else that you know to be her favorite. If you have a sports fan in the family, a basket filled with his/her favorite teams memorabilia will be a big hit. Some examples may be a t-shirt and baseball cap, a rare trading card or other official collectibles. Once you have filled the gift baskets with goodies, its time to purchase clear cellophane gift bags. After opening the gift bag, carefully place the gift basket and all of its contents inside. Once you have it perfectly situated, secure the top with clear tape or a staple. A large bow at the top will make your gift baskets not only personalized, but the recipient will also know that you put a lot of thought into the design and look of their gift. Another terrific idea for gift baskets is to include a colorful variety of fruits, including apples, oranges, pears, strawberries, plums, etc. If you purchase gift baskets that do not feature a handle, these can be placed on a dining room table or as the centerpiece in the living room. Fruit gift baskets are ideal for teachers, doctors, lawyers or the health conscious family member. If you are looking for some additional gifts to include, consider jewelry, a leather wallet, special event ticket, gift certificates, stuffed animal, favorite candy, etc. The more color and variety you can add to a gift basket, the more festive your gift will appear. Still need some theme ideas for gift baskets? Many enjoy creating personalized pet gift baskets, baby gift baskets and even newlywed gift baskets. There is no end to the number of creations that can be made with a little imagination and some time and effort. How Adventure Games Evolved

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Jake Jenkins For a greater part of the 1980’s adventure games have been popular as compared to other types of games. An adventure game is a type of video game that involves puzzle-solving as well as exploration with and some of interaction with the game characters. Narration tends to be the focus and as a result most adventure games tend to be single-player as a multi-player mode will remove the story-based aspect of it. Most adventure games come in the form of computer games although it’s possible to find console-based versions these days. So what makes an adventure game what it is? Well, one of the common features of adventure games is “fetch-quests” theme where in order to progress, the player has to help a character in order to gain an important item or information. For instance, in a typical scenario where a player needs healing, he may be required to obtain a plant or the ingredients needed to make the magic healing potion. In these cases, the player often has to perform acts of benevolence or selflessness - such as freeing prisoners, animals - in order to locate of gain the reward of these ingredients. There are times they have to distract some characters in order to steal their price. Another feature is to trap players in a dead end or a seemingly impossible place to escape from forcing the player to employ drastic measures in order to get out of the trap or find a means (sometimes an artefact or a key) to free themselves. These unwinnable games where the player met a dead-end were usually left unfinished unless he was able to return to the original position. A well-known example of this is Return to Zork. Although, adventure games were very popular in the 1980’s, this popularity quickly declined in the early 90’s when the Action games became the “rage”. As a result it was not financially sound to create and market them when people had no interest. The advent of console game platforms and MMORPG has not helped either. Nevertheless popular adventure games like Syberia and Syberia II have been published both for the PC and Xbox. In addition, Nintendo DS released of Trace Memory and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney in 2005 and Hotel Dusk: Room 215 in 2006. The latest development is that free online adventure games can now obtained on premium internet portals without the need for download or plug-in. Many game lovers are now turning their attention to the internet not just for playing games but for socializing as well. Perhaps this is the new way in which adventure games will be played. Craft Beads, Old And New

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Candice Sabrina Craft beads have been used to create jewelry and other decorative pieces for hundreds of years. In ancient times, stone, turtle shells, animal horns and hooves, and fresh water clams were used to make decorations. Now, beads can be made from semi-precious stones, wood, glass, and plastic just to name a few. The possibilities with craft beads are endless. Craft bead projects range from beginner to advanced, complicated designs. You can purchase craft bead kits at your local craft store or online. If you already have a supply of craft beads, you can find free patterns and designs online. There are even kits and patterns available for children. By far, the most popular use for craft beads is creating jewelry. They aren’t limited to use in jewelry, however. You can make holiday decorations, like beaded Christmas trees, or you can put beads on household items to give them a new flare. Another interesting project to try is to weave small beads together in intricate patterns to create stunning flowers. Craft beads are made out of a variety of materials including glass, metal, terracotta, wood, plastic, stone, bone, horn, ivory, wood, ceramic, fiber, shell, pearl, coral, gemstones, seeds, resin, and clay. Beads can also be fashioned into many shapes including melon, oval, barrel, cylindrical, round, square, star, butterfly, heart, and flower. When you consider the vast number of beads available, the possibilities are endless. The cost of individual beads will be determined by what they are made of, their use, and their age. You can even take beads from an old necklace or other piece of jewelry and craft them into a new piece that you will love. You can create unique jewelry for yourself or create decorative gifts for loved ones. If you are going to create your own design, be sure that you have all the craft beads and other supplies you will need. You can do this by drawing out a detailed plan or diagram of the piece you want to create. To complete a project, you will need craft beads, wire, wire cutters, and crimp beads. Crimp beads are soft metal and are used to complete a strand of beads. If you are creating jewelry, you will need the appropriate clasp also. If you would rather follow a pattern, there are books available at your local craft store, or you can find hundreds of free patterns online. Those instructions should give you a list of needed supplies. You can purchase craft bead projects that are already completed at craft shows, stores, and online. The price of these items will depend on the type of beads used and the intricacy of the piece. You may also be able to find older beaded pieces or ethnic pieces. Native American, Mexican, and African bead craft are beautiful and unique. Whether you are a beginner or an advance crafter, try doing some bead work. You will come to love using craft beads for their versatility and beauty. You will also love the jewelry and other decorative pieces you are able to create! The Boyfriend Evaluation: Getting To Know Him

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Brian Rzepczynski Introduction So you made it through the first date with this new guy and hes intrigued you. You find him attractive, enjoyable to be around, and with the little bit of information youve been able to obtain at your first contact, he seems to meet some of your personal requirements and needs for a potential boyfriend thus far. So now what? Now youre about to embark upon the fine art of dating and courtship. Together, the two of you will begin the process of getting to know each other better through going out on dates for fun and recreation and learning about one another in a variety of different contexts and situations. Through this relationship-building process, youll slowly begin forming an emotional bond while gauging if the other is compatible with your visions for a life partner. Gaining this wisdom is only possible with experience and exposure to each other as you learn about each others preferences, personalities, needs, goals, dreams, etc. This article will offer a checklist of qualities and characteristics to be on the lookout for as youre forming your impressions about your new dating partner. This can help guide you in making sound decisions about your goodness-of-fit with him, as well as to guard against any red flags that you may stumble upon along the way so you dont get embroiled into an unhealthy relationship. First Things First While this article is about examining traits in the guy youre seeing to help you make good relationship choices, never forget that your dating success rests largely on yourself. This means that youve done the work necessary to have a stable, balanced lifestyle, have a strong sense of self-esteem and confidence, have put closure to unfinished business from the past, and have a clear vision of who you are, what you want, and what you stand for (both as an individual and for a life partner and relationship). This becomes your foundation for leading a fulfilling life and having the knowledge of your negotiable and non-negotiable needs for a lifelong lover that youll need as you date. Secondly, keep those pants on and hormones in check! Unless you want to define your budding relationship solely by sex, jumping into bed too quickly can confuse and blur your assessment process. Sex does change things and you dont want to sabotage a potentially good thing by being sexual too early before a foundation of trust, rapport, and security has been established between the two of you. So, down boy! It will be that much hotter when the time is right! The Boyfriend Evaluation The following are some questions you can ask yourself as you get acquainted with your boyfriend prospects as you date them. These characteristics can make or break a relationship; it all depends on what your personal requirements and ideals are that will indicate how much priority youll give to each of these items. This list is just a starting pointadd your own for a more personalized touch. Whether youve been dating your guy for couple of days or for a number of months, keep your eyes peeled regarding some of the following: Is he honest and does he demonstrate integrity? Does he do what he says hes going to do? (eg. when he says hes going to call you, does he promptly?) Is he available to you, able to spend quality time with you, and make you a priority in his schedule? Does he have friends, hobbies, or other outlets that make for a balanced lifestyle and individuality? Does he strike a balance between having fun and attending to responsibilities in his life? Rate his degree of affection, playfulness, and capacity for intimacy. Whats your sexual compatibility like? What are his views on monogamy? Does he seem interested in health and wellness and devote time for self-care and renewal? What are his relationships like with his family? How comfortable is he with being gay and whats his level of outness? Does he appear to have any mental health issues (depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, etc.) or addictions (alcohol/drugs, gambling, work, sex, food, etc.)? How does he appear to handle his finances and how are his spending habits? What are his views on money, marriage, religion, children, gay relationships, living together, future life planning issues, etc.? Does he stimulate you intellectually? How does he deal with anger and stress? Does he become violent? How adept is he at dealing with his emotions? How are his communication and conflict management skills? Is he already involved in another relationship? Has he been able to let go of past boyfriends? In observing him, how does he treat or talk about other people? Is he critical or judgmental? Is he able to be decisive about things or do you tend to have to make all the decisions in the relationship? (eg. What do you want to do? I dont know, what do you want to do?) Assess his personality traits: Is heClingy? Dependent? Emotionally distant or responsive? Controlling? Able to share? Maturity level? Giving and kind? What type of relationship is he looking for? Is he ready for commitment? Is he willing to put forth the effort involved in building a long-term relationship? Conclusion While this may seem like a lot of detective work, dont become so preoccupied with your mental checklist that it distracts you from your relationship. Make your dating life enjoyable and an adventure; have fun with it! But at the first sign of unsolvable red flags or non-negotiable needs not being met, remove yourself from the dating relationship before you invest any more of your heart and precious time into ityoull be doing both of you a favor. Settling and thinking you can change your partner over time are serious traps that you want to avoid. Turn the above questions back on yourself to see if there are any areas where you might be able to improve upon to make yourself more solid and whole. So enjoy getting to know your new guy and all the lessons youll learn about yourself and relationships. Let the journey begin! 2005 Brian L. Fantastic Job Fair Follow-up

Friday, March 14th, 2008

By Mary Jeanne Vincent Set the stage for fantastic job fair follow-up while you are still at the job fair. As the conversation is coming to a close, ask for the company representatives business card. If he or she doesnt have one, ask for their name, title, and best way to reach them. Write that information down in your notebook. Thank them for their time and re-affirm your interest in the company and position. Back home, sort through the business cards, company literature, and notes that you made. Prioritize them for follow up. SET YOURSELF APART FROM OTHER CANDIDATES by sending a thank you note that reminds them who you are and what you have to offer. Express interest in the position that you discussed and mention why you are such a good match. Request an opportunity to meet with them again. Let them know that you will contact them later in the week. Remember, recruiters often see hundreds of candidates at a job fair. It is often hard for them to keep track of whos who so do your part to help them remember you! PICK UP THE TELEPHONE. Ninety-five percent of job candidates never follow up. They wait for the employer to call them. Set yourself apart from the competition. Pick up the telephone and make that follow up telephone call. After small job fairs, follow up within three days; unless they suggest you follow up sooner. It is generally a good idea to give employers a few days to catch up on their work and sort through the piles of rsums and applications they collected during the job fair. HOW CAN YOU MAKE THE RECRUITER OR MANAGER WANT TO TAKE YOUR FOLLOW-UP CALL? Do your research before you pick up the telephone. Then, prepare a couple of job-related questions that demonstrate your knowledge of the company and interest in the position. Dont call during their busy timesusually Monday morning and Friday afternoon. Treat whoever answers with courtesy and respect. That person may be the one who decides whether or not your call goes through to the right person. WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET THEM ON THE LINE? Hi this is Sally Smith. We met at the job fair last Monday. I know you must be busy; I have a couple of quick questions about X position. Do you have just a few minutes? Be benefit driven. Keep the focus on whats in it for them! Remind the person who you are and what position(s) you discussed. Then ask the questions you prepared. Listen to their responses. Express your interest in the position and wrap up by asking about next steps in the interview process. If they are not ready to schedule interviews, ask about the best time to check back with them. FOLLOW UP AT APPROPRIATE INTERVALS. The general rule of thumb is no more than three contacts (phone, e-mail, mail) within ten days. Apply these fantastic job fair follow up tips and you will be certain to shorten your search and experience job hunting success! How to Turn Your Marketing Into a Money-Making Machine - Preparing for Marketing That Yields Results

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

By Josh Barinstein The usual complaint from companies is that Marketing simply does not yield as expected. So much effort, time, and money goes into campaigns, and yet the frustrations persist: Why arent sales up? Why are we not growing? And the truth, sadly enough, is that no one can really pinpoint what is working well, and what simply is not producing anything (and costing the company!). As with anything else, preparation is key. Without laying a foundation for success, success will not magically appear. Strategizing Strategy comes first, allowing you to determine your goals and what actions you will need to take accordingly. Once strategy is firmly in place, you will have the language at your disposal for all communications with your target audience. Here are important areas to define: 1. Identify who you are, your values, what you stand for 2. Have a clear vision for where your company is headed, a mission statement to live by 3. Be sure you understand your product and/or service well 4. Always know your audience inside and out 5. Dissect in great detail what the benefits of your product/service are Note that going through this process is crucial whether you have been in business for a day or for a decade! And it is important to review these areas periodically, at least once a year. In doing so, you continually have a good grasp of who you are and what your purpose is as a company. Your overall strategy unfolds from the above answers and statements. Before diving into the gameplan, answer the following questions, which will help define the direction you will take in the years to come: 1. Where do we want to be as a company in a year? What does it look and feel like? 2. How about in five years? 3. Ten years? Be detailed. Dont hold back as you define every aspect of your organization, and how you will interface with all those around you: management, employees, clients, and vendors. The thought precedes the event, therefore start by painting the picture, and its realization will happen naturally. The gameplan This is the fun part, the actual gears of your money-making machine. I recommend that you use a calendar approach, either via software, or through a wall-sized calendar that everyone can write on and reference easily. The calendar becomes your week-by-week or month-by-month roadmap for what you will be doing to reach your audiencethe gameplan itself that will keep you focused on your goals. By knowing what is coming up well in advance, you will be able to plan accordingly and execute successfully. The purchase rarely happens right away, and it is therefore crucial to stay in touch with potential customers consistently over the long-term. This will gradually convince them that you are the company of choice, and allow them to overcome their fears and objections. Cutting through the clutter of SPAM and regular mail, billboards, radio, and TVjust to name a fewtakes time. You need to stand out and have something useful to say. To establish expertise and win audiences over, try these ideas: 1. A letter announcing an upcoming event. Hold a special event (presentation, seminar) and make a big deal about it. 2. A follow-up call on the letter. This is different than cold-calling, as you are specifically referencing this special event, of potential interest to that targeted individual. 3. The actual event. Whether showcasing some product, covering some aspect of investing, health-related mattersthis brings you face-to-face with your audience, allowing for unparalleled interaction. 4. A document follow-up to that event. You might choose to make available information from the event, for those who were not able to attend. More educational material to draw them closer to you. 5. A case study or useful article that is mailed out. Not written about you, but about a topic relating to your business or industry. The case study is a powerful tool for discussing how you solved a customers problems, and can include testimonials that are worth gold. 6. An email announcement. Something useful that you recommend that could be of benefit to your audience. Only to those who have opted in, of course. Bottom line: do not bore or annoy your audience! Give them educational and interesting materials without actually selling (the beauty and power of successful Marketing).
